Working Toward a Brighter Future for the Children in Sri Lanka
Wanathavilluwa is on a narrow road which leads from Puttalam to Mannar through the outskirts of the Wilpaththu National Game Sanctuary. Eighteen kilometers north of Puttalam on the forest road to Mannar, it is literally “in the middle of nowhere”.
We have funded the construction of a small school, helping some impoverished children in this remote area where resources are scarce. We provide funding for supplies and books, and funds for the purchase of all school books and supplies as well as shoes for the regular school year for each student. Students at the GCE Advanced Level are sent to private tutoring classes in all subjects. Students in the university are given a stipend toward their expenses. Those who are unable to secure an entrance to a campus based university are provided with opportunities to further their studies through the Open University system. At the completion of their formal schooling, these children are usually faced without a future beyond their humble beginnings. Many go back to the menial work of their parents. We are funding further education and vocational training for these youngsters. We are exploring other opportunities to assist in a meaningful way.
